Hexagram 3: Difficulty at the Beginning
Clouds gathering above Thunder. Untangle the first knot.
An original modern reflection on the I Ching image. This is not a translation of the classical Judgment or line statements.
Untangle the first knot
Clouds and thunder suggest energy gathering before a clear pattern has formed. Early confusion can contain several different problems disguised as one. You do not need to solve the entire beginning at once. Separate what is unknown from what is merely unfinished, then find one workable thread.
A question to sit with
Are you short of information, support, a clear sequence, or simply a first attempt?
One small step
Write your main obstacle in one sentence. Reduce it to a task you can finish today, and record what the attempt teaches you.
Reading the figure
The upper trigram is Water; the lower trigram is Thunder. The first line is at the bottom, and the sixth is at the top. You identify this hexagram from its six-line figure, not from a word match to your question.
Read the image alongside the actual circumstances you know. Notice what fits and what does not. The relating hexagram depends on your changing lines, so there is no single fixed “next hexagram” for this pattern.
Classical text · Hexagram 3
Original Chinese from the Zhouyi. The notes below are our own brief readings, followed separately by modern reflection prompts.
The Judgment
Plain-language noteBeginnings contain vitality as well as unresolved difficulty. The text puts establishing order and support ahead of a hasty advance.
All six line statements · bottom to top
Line 1
Plain-language noteThe beginning pauses and turns rather than advancing. Establishing a sound footing and people who can share responsibility gives that pause a purpose.
Line 2
Plain-language noteThe scene moves from hesitation and a suspected raider to recognition of a suitor, emphasizing discernment and patient commitment. Its ten years belong to the ancient account, not a timetable for the reader.
Line 3
Plain-language notePursuing a deer without a forest guide leads deeper into the woods. Recognizing when knowledge or guidance is missing can make stopping the wiser response.
Line 4
Plain-language noteHesitation gives way to seeking an alliance once the relationship and intention become clearer. The focus is a fitting connection rather than a guarantee that any particular partnership will succeed.
Line 5
Plain-language noteBenefit or resources are held back and cannot yet flow freely. The passage distinguishes a limited, manageable undertaking from an expansion beyond present capacity.
Line 6
Plain-language noteRepeated hesitation and intense grief portray the weight of being stuck. The image invites a check for cycles that consume effort without changing the situation.

What changes when one line moves?
This map changes exactly one line at a time. If your cast has several changing lines, all of them flip together; the resulting pattern may differ from every row below. These are structural changes, not translations of the classical line statements.
